Garage Door Opener Features

In our last post we explored the major differences in types of drives and motors for garage door openers. Here, we’ll look at a few additional features that some garage door openers offer. While not as crucial as drives or motors, these optional perks could make the difference that helps you settle on a certain opener. Here are a few extra features to consider when deciding which garage door opener you might prefer:

Light Bulb Sockets

Some garage door openers have two light bulb sockets while some only have one. If you want more light in your garage, then choose an opener with two light bulb sockets.

Motion Detection Lighting

This feature is very useful, especially when entering your garage at night. Most garage door openers have a light that turns on while it’s operating and then shuts off automatically after a certain amount of time. However, perhaps you leave the garage open for a longer period of time, as you work in your yard or go for a walk. In that case, a motion detection light on your garage door opener can be a helpful feature since it will automatically switch back on when you walk into the garage, so you won’t have to fumble for a light switch in a dark garage.

OHDAnywhere

Compatibility with Mobile Device Apps

Some garage door openers can sync with mobile devices like iPhones and Android phones through the OHDAnywhere™ app. OHDAnywhere™ is a remote access control system app that’s compatible with most residential garage door openers. With OHDAnywhere™ you can open, close, and monitor your garage door from most mobile devices. The OHDAnywhere™ app will show you when someone is opening or closing your garage door. You can also use the app to open the door for someone else when you’re away from home. Or, for example, if you’re away and can’t remember if you closed the garage door, the app will show you whether or not your door is open.

Variable Speed

One feature on some garage door openers allows the door to start slowly, speed up, then gently stop. This is called “Soft start—soft stop.” This technology is possible in DC motor garage door openers, allowing the opener to operate at various speeds. This results in smoother garage door operation, and decreases overall wear and tear on the garage door opening system.

Ability to Sync with Your Car

Systems such as Homelink® and Car2U® offer the convenience of syncing your car with your garage door opener. Most garage door openers are now compatible with these types of car systems. If this is a feature you desire, make sure to check that the garage door opener you choose will work with your car before purchasing.

Security Features

Different garage door openers come with different options for security systems. Current security technology helps keep your garage and home safe by securing garage door openers with rolling codes. Rolling codes cause your security combination to change (out of 4.3 billion possible numbers) each time the remote control is pressed. This makes it exponentially more difficult for thieves to pinpoint your current combination. Modern security technology is one of the best perks of new garage door openers, and is one of the main reasons that people choose to upgrade to a newer opener. If you’re in the market for a new garage door opener, make sure that it comes with rolling code ability and find out what other security features it offers.
